Shane Prior was elected General President by the Executive Board of the Queensland Police Union in August 2024 after five years serving as the Union’s Vice President.

Shane graduated from the Oxley Academy in 2005, with his First Year in General Duties at Indooroopilly, before moving to Fortitude Valley and Brisbane Target Team West and another stint in General Duties at Brisbane City.

Shane’s Plain Clothes career included CIB at Indooroopilly, Boondall CPIU, Brisbane City as well as Taskforce Maxima and Financial & Cyber Crime at Police Headquarters.
Although all his service has been in the Brisbane metro area, Shane has travelled extensively engaging with various squads plus those members working in rural and remote postings.

Since his election as General President Shane has prioritised his support for diversity and for police to be awarded positions on merit. He’s also demanded the QPU be open to scrutiny on the decisions made and how members funds are utilised.

Together with the Executive Board Shane has taken a strong stance on who receives QPU support. Those who go to work with the best intentions and things go bad will always have the strength of QPU backing but anyone caught deliberately doing the wrong thing or harming fellow members will be alone and without assistance.

Shane is a father of three and together with his police officer wife Amy they have a blended family. Together they recently welcomed son George and life with a toddler and two working parents is a constant juggle. His own family situation has given him insight into the demands of creating a suitable work-life balance.

Shane is currently the face of a multi-media campaign across Queensland demanding reform around Domestic & Family Violence. The action is focussed on a community petition to prompt innovative reform to enhance protections for victims, increase support for agencies that provide care and rehabilitation but also administrative change to reduce the crushing time response required by police. The petition has already recorded the highest response of any petition currently lodged with the State Parliament.

Shane will stand for a membership wide election for the role of General President in 2027.
